Settling Into Life in the Netherlands with Hollandify: A Practical Guide
When you move to the Netherlands, there’s a lot to get used to—from the transportation system to understanding how taxes work. But don’t worry, Hollandify is here to guide you every step of the way and ensure that settling in is a breeze. Here’s a practical guide to help you adjust to daily life in the Netherlands.
Registering at the Municipality (Gemeente)
One of the first things you’ll need to do when you arrive is register with your local municipality. This involves submitting your identification documents and proof of address. Once you’re registered, you’ll get your BSN (citizen service number), which is necessary for working, healthcare, and taxes.
Health Insurance & Medical Care
Health insurance is mandatory in the Netherlands, so you’ll need to sign up for basic health insurance within four months of arriving. Your employer will assist with this if you’re employed. You’ll also need to choose a general practitioner (GP) for general health care.
Dutch Banking System
Opening a Dutch bank account is essential for managing your finances. You’ll need your BSN number, passport, and proof of address. ING, ABN AMRO, and Rabobank offer services in English, making it easier for expats to settle in.
Transportation & Getting Around
Public transport in the Netherlands is excellent. The OV-chipkaart is your key to buses, trams, and trains. If you plan to bike (which is highly recommended!), you’ll find bike lanes everywhere, making cycling easy and safe. Renting or buying a bike is also very easy.
Social Integration
Join local groups and clubs to make friends, and explore the vibrant expat communities. The Dutch are known for being friendly and welcoming, and with a little effort, you’ll be integrated into the local culture in no time.
At Hollandify, we can connect you with the right resources to make your integration into Dutch life as smooth as possible.
